Most repairs we do were preventable with fifteen minutes a month. Here's the schedule — put it on your calendar.
Every month (15 minutes)
- Belts: pluck them like a guitar string — a low musical tone, not a flop. Tension per your printer's method.
- Rails and rods: wipe clean, then a small amount of the right lubricant — lithium grease for lead screws, light machine oil or the manufacturer's grease for linear rails.
- Fans: dust the hotend, part-cooling, and board fans. A stalled board fan kills mainboards.
- Bolts: snug the frame and toolhead screws — vibration loosens them.
- Nozzle: brass nozzles are consumables. Inspect for wear; swap every few hundred hours, sooner with abrasives.
Every quarter
- Deep-clean the build plate with soap and water
- Check wiring for pinch points and fraying, especially on moving harnesses
- Re-run full calibration: bed level, Z-offset, flow, and input shaping if supported
- Update firmware if a stable release is pending
