Wet Filament: Symptoms and Drying

Filament is hygroscopic — it drinks moisture straight out of the air, and Oklahoma summers are a buffet. Wet filament is the most under-diagnosed cause of a printer that "suddenly got worse."

Symptoms

  • Popping, crackling, or hissing while extruding — that's steam
  • Fuzzy or rough surfaces on prints that used to be smooth
  • Heavy stringing that retraction tuning won't fix
  • Weak layer bonding — parts snap along layers easily
  • Bubbles or gaps in extruded lines

How fast it happens

PLA tolerates weeks in open air. PETG degrades noticeably in one to two weeks. TPU and nylon can be ruined in days. If a spool has lived on an open shelf all summer, assume it's wet.

Drying options

  • Filament dryer: set-and-forget, per-material presets — worth it if you print PETG or TPU regularly.
  • Oven: PLA 45°C / PETG 65°C for 4–6 hours — only if your oven holds low temps accurately; many run hot and will fuse the spool.
  • Storage: dry boxes or sealed bags with desiccant. Recharge desiccant when the indicator changes color.
