Starter FDM Printers (2023–2026)

FDM printers melt a strand of plastic filament and draw your part one thin layer at a time — it’s the kind of 3D printing most people picture, and where almost everyone should start. Jargon decoder: a bedslinger moves the bed back and forth (simpler, slower); CoreXY moves only the lightweight head (faster); an enclosure traps heat so warp-prone plastics like ABS behave; and AMS/CFS/ACE boxes are filament changers that swap colors through one nozzle, wasting some plastic (“purge”) on every swap. Every machine here is under about $450. The pattern in this tier: the printers that just work are closed ecosystems, and the open ones make you earn it. Prices are US street as of July 2026. Machines from the 2023–2024 wave that now sell at clearance prices are covered at the bottom — some are the best deals on this page.

Why they're listed

they sold in huge numbers in 2022–2023 and flood the used market.

What to know

  • Ender 5 S1 (220×220×280 cube frame): good Sprite extruder and cooling, but the cantilevered bed sags at the front as prints get heavy — leveling drifts, and community bed-support mods exist for a reason.
  • CR-10 SE (220×220×265, linear rails, Klipper-based): fast and self-calibrating, but the hotend fan is famously loud — quieter housings are the top community mod. Wi-Fi loops are the other gripe. A $108 refurb is a bargain.
  • Ender 3 S1 Pro (220×220×270, Sprite Pro 300°C): fine printer, slow era. CR Touch corner-leveling inconsistency and firmware confusion from Creality's mid-production chip swaps are the known aches.

the hybrid leveling is tedious (worse on the 320 mm Plus); Elegoo's Klipper fork is outdated and update paths differ by board revision; leveling wheels lack lock nuts.

Most common problems

  • Ribbon-cable failures/EMI on early Plus boards causing mid-print errors (why Elegoo revised the board).

What to know: slow Marlin-era machines (60–100 mm/s real) with 260°C PTFE hotends, but reliable and beloved. Known aches: corruption-prone microSD workflow, touchscreen freezes, bed warp on the 420 mm Max, and extruder gear wear with age. A cheap used Pro is still a fine first printer if speed doesn't matter.

  • Warping on ABS/ASA without an enclosure; real speeds far below marketing until tuned; a flimsy-feeling touchscreen mount; delta-specific calibration tripping up newcomers.

AnkerMake M5 / Kingroon KLP-1

one dead, one alive

AnkerMake M5: was $699–799; orphaned when Anker suspended all FDM sales in July 2025. Nice fit-and-finish, but the AI camera missed real failures while false-flagging good prints, hotends clogged, and now parts and app support are evaporating. Used $150–300 — buy only as a curiosity. Kingroon KLP-1: ~$269–339, available. A 210×210×210 enclosed CoreXY with honest, unlocked Klipper (Mainsail/Fluidd) and linear rails on every axis — remarkable at the price. The tax: hit-or-miss QC (shipping damage, stripped screw holes, misaligned doors), a resistive touchscreen that wants a stylus, units arriving set to Chinese, and weak part cooling. Owners commonly reflash to mainline Klipper and call it a day.
