Resin printers work backwards from FDM: instead of melting plastic, a screen under a vat of liquid resin flashes UV light and hardens one entire layer at a time. The payoff is detail no nozzle can touch — miniature faces, jewelry, dental work. The cost is the workflow: liquid resin is sticky and mildly toxic (gloves, ventilation), every print needs an alcohol wash and a UV cure afterwards, and the screen and the clear film in the vat are wear parts you will replace. When you see “12K/14K/16K,” that’s the screen’s pixel count — smaller microns (µm) mean finer detail.
Read this first: universal resin pain points
- Toxicity/handling: uncured resin is a skin sensitizer — nitrile gloves, eye protection, and ventilation are mandatory. Built-in carbon filters reduce but never eliminate odor. Skin sensitization can permanently end the hobby for some users.
- FEP/release film failures: films cloud, stretch, and puncture with use. A puncture leaks resin onto the LCD and usually kills it, which makes this the most expensive routine accident in resin printing. Replace films every ~20–50 prints or after any hard failure; cured debris left in the vat punches through the film next print.
- LCD lifespan: mono LCDs are consumables (~2,000+ hours). Degradation shows as soft prints, dead zones, and failed layers. Replacements run $50–100 (small) to $345+ (15" class).
- Workflow tax: every print needs an IPA (or water) wash + UV cure — extra equipment, 15–30 min hands-on per print, and hazardous-waste disposal of spent IPA/towels.
