1. Filament changers (Bambu AMS, Creality CFS, Anycubic ACE): one nozzle, a box that swaps spools. Cheap and popular, but every swap purges molten plastic into a waste pile — 20–50% of a colorful print can end up in the bin. 2. Dual nozzle (Bambu H2D/X2D): two nozzles on one carriage — two materials with far less waste, but the idle nozzle rides along. 3. IDEX — independent dual extruders: two carriages that move separately, so the idle head parks fully out of the way. Bonus modes: print two copies at once (duplication) or mirrored pairs. 4. Toolchangers (Prusa XL, Snapmaker U1): the machine physically docks and picks up whole print heads — up to five materials with almost zero waste. More heads, more cost, more calibration.

A note before you shop: AMS-style filament changers killed most of the consumer IDEX market. The survivors below earn their place two ways — duplication/mirror production, and zero-purge dual-material work (like dissolvable supports). Prices are US street as of July 2026.
Snapmaker J1s
Price $999–1,399 (still sold; J1 from 2022 superseded by the J1s)
Specs 300×200×200 mm (copy mode 160 mm, mirror 150 mm wide) • IDEX: dual-material, copy, mirror, backup modes • 300°C nozzles, 350 mm/s • one-piece die-cast frame, enclosed.
Pros
- Best build quality in consumer IDEX: cast aluminum frame, linear rails, quick-swap 300°C hotends.
- Fast for an IDEX, with anti-ooze wipers and a purge design that mostly works.
- Copy and mirror modes double small-part production — the reason to buy IDEX at all.
Cons
- Short 200 mm Z; Luban slicer is weak (most owners move to Cura/Orca profiles); no camera; no heated chamber; proprietary parts.
Most common problems
- A widespread hotend clogging saga (worst with white and silk PLA) — big enough that Snapmaker surveyed owners and shipped a redesigned hardened hotend kit.
- The fix has its own catch: the new hotend is press-fit, so a worn $2 nozzle means replacing an $80–99 module.
- Firmware quirks and calibration resets reported on the forum; oozing/color bleed on dual-material prints until prime towers are tuned.
Sovol SV04
Price ~$349 clearance. Gone from Sovol's own store — end of line.

- The infamous manual X/Y/Z offset calibration between heads: a test-print-and-measure workflow reviewers called "incredibly tedious," with offsets drifting for the first weeks.

Creality Sermoon D3 Pro

Weedo X40 V3 / JGMaker Artist-D Pro / Qidi i-Fast
Price/status: all three effectively discontinued. X40 V3 ($699) sold out and abandoned by Weedo; Artist-D Pro sold as $399 "unknown condition" returns; i-Fast dropped by Qidi (superseded by its own Plus 4/Q2).
Why they're listed
thousands are in circulation used, and they come up constantly in IDEX searches.
What to know
- X40 V3: 300×300×400 IDEX with camera and auto-level, but stock firmware stagnated — the community's X40 PRO firmware is now the only maintained path, and spares are scarce.
- Artist-D Pro: decent components (Meanwell PSU, TMC2209), abandoned Marlin fork, vanished support. Orphaned hardware.
- i-Fast: not IDEX at all — two nozzles on one carriage with a 60°C chamber. Its recurring complaint was inactive-nozzle ooze scarring dual prints; parts now only via Qidi email.
- Buy any of these only dirt-cheap, as a project, with eyes open.
UltiMaker S7
Price $5,999 (cut from $7,999 after the S8 launched) • in stock at US resellers
Specs 330×240×300 mm • lift-switching dual extrusion, swappable print cores, 2.85 mm filament • enclosed, Air Manager filtration (95% UFP) standard, PEI flex plate, camera.

the S5 platform matured — inductive leveling with tilt compensation is far more dependable than the S5's probe; 300+ tested material profiles in Cura; print cores make nozzle repair a 30-second job; deep fleet tooling (Digital Factory).
Cons
slow — the S8 is four times faster for more money, and Bambu-class machines embarrass it per dollar; 2.85 mm filament shrinks material choice; no heated chamber; print cores are a ~$100–125 consumable.
